About Grace Whitfield and These Bible Studies

Grace Whitfield is the author of Bible Studies for Husband and Wife, an eight-week couples Bible study workbook, and of this site. The site is here to help couples who want to open the Bible together, and to point them to the workbook if they want all eight weeks.

What these studies are

They are couples Bible studies: practical guides for a husband and wife to read a passage together, think on their own, talk, pray and choose one small action. They are not sermons, academic studies or counseling, and they do not assume your marriage is in crisis. Where Christians read a passage in more than one way, the pages say so instead of settling the question for you.

Two rules run through everything here. First, keep what the passage says apart from how you apply it. Second, keep each spouse's instruction intact: when a passage speaks to wives and to husbands, read both before discussing either. The studies will not hand you a verse to use as ammunition against your spouse.

How the Bible passages are quoted

All Scripture on this site is quoted word for word from the English Standard Version (ESV), from the passages printed in the workbook, and the site quotes only passages that are in the workbook. Verse numbers are kept so you can find each verse in your own Bible. The workbook prints every week's passage in full. If you read along in another translation, the wording will differ a little, and that is normal.

Safety comes first

No passage, and no instruction within any passage, gives anyone license to threaten, coerce, manipulate, isolate or intimidate the person they married. If a study ever seems to press on that, the study is wrong and the passage has been misread. A couples Bible study is not a substitute for a pastor, a counselor or a doctor, and it is not a guide for responding to abuse.

Safety note from the workbook. Nothing in these studies asks anyone to stay in danger, keep silent about abuse, or submit to violence, threats, sexual coercion or control. If you are afraid of your spouse, skip the joint conversations and do not write private answers where your spouse can read them. In immediate danger call 911 (US), 999 (UK) or 112 (EU). US National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233 (or text START to 88788). UK National Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247; Men's Advice Line: 0808 8010327.
